Management by Results means results-oriented leadership. This is a leadership technique closely related to Management by Objectives. The major difference is that this leadership technique is much more authoritarian. While MbO is still a matter of goal setting, here it is clear target specifications. This means that employees have little to no say in the nature and volume of their work. Therefore, it is all the more important to adhere to the SMART rule for tasks and objectives. Here again:

S Specific: clearly and precisely defined

M Measurable: measurable or verifiable

Achievable: achievable

R Realistic: realistic (also: relevant)

T Timed: clearly defined in time

While the primary tool of MbO is goal-setting discussions, MbR relies on goal planning. In addition to SMART, it is particularly important that the tasks are exclusively result-relevant for the employee. In addition to goal planning, target-performance comparisons are usually conducted at least once a year. Based on the results, the manager should then draw positive or negative consequences for the employee, depending on whether positive or negative deviations from the results are identified.
