There is no precise timeframe for Management by Systems. It is likely that it was developed much later than other management techniques, as MbS generally requires the use of computers and the internet and is particularly used in complex workflows common in the modern and digital age.
Management by Systems means leadership through system control. MbS is a management technique that focuses on the complexity of internal company processes. It is based on systems theory and thus the uniqueness of each individual phenomenon that occurs. This also means that the management technique itself is a central subject of MbS. The guiding principle is: A management technique is always applied when it is the most sensible solution – or: continuously applied where it is the most sensible solution. This is characterized by detailed documents in which procedures are meticulously recorded. In particular, a functioning system from another company cannot simply be adopted; it requires precise adaptation to the company's own requirements.
Another characteristic of MbS is that managers rarely need to intervene in processes, as they regulate themselves. Here, too, there is control and feedback. Both are provided by the employees and managers affected by a system. If a system is not optimized, it can be changed. MbS therefore requires a high level of cooperation within a company.
