5S is a method that strives to make the work process as error-free and barrier-free as possible through order and cleanliness in the workplace. It was developed as part of Toyota's Kaizen (M14) system and is used in the manufacturing sector and increasingly in the service sector. The 5S stands for the initial letters of the five steps in Japanese that must be achieved to achieve consistent order. According to the method, this is the prerequisite for successful workflows. In German, 5S is rarely translated as 5A.
Toyota's Kaizen program of the 1950s developed a series of methods to ensure continuous improvement and set standards for quality improvement. 5S was created with the fundamental idea of empowering employees to become experts in their workplace.
The five Ss represent steps that must be taken to implement a proper workflow in the workplace: Seiri , Seiton , Seiso , Seiketsu , and Shitsuke . They are rarely supplemented by the sixth S, Shukan .
