Laissez-faire is French and means something like "let them do it." What this means for you as a manager: In short, you simply don't lead at all, or you don't take on leadership-specific tasks. This is expressed in the following criteria:
-no rules
-no communication initiative from management
-Leadership has little or no information
-Management has little or no understanding of the work processes
-Leadership has no influence on the work
-Management does not make any decisions that affect employees
-no criticism, no praise from management
-absolute initiative and personal responsibility of the employees
-either impersonal contact or no contact at all
This puts the laissez-faire leadership style at the exact opposite end of the scale from authoritarian leadership. Management that applies this style accepts what is presented to them, when it is presented to them. Theoretically, leadership is therefore even less powerful than the employees, and it's questionable whether one can still speak of leadership in this case, or whether laissez-faire is simply a way of working in which everyone organizes themselves. This only works if employees are highly ambitious and motivated.
